“Merow?” Katie said in a very quiet voice the next morning.

Margaret opened her eyes. Katie was staring at her with a slightly confused look on her feline face.

Margaret grinned at her. “I’m in the wrong bed,” she said. “Is it seven?”

“Merooowwww,” Katie told her.

Margaret slid out of bed as Katie jumped to the floor. Megan was still asleep, but even in sleep she looked sad. Margaret shook her head and then quietly walked to the door. The clock on the microwave confirmed that it was seven as Margaret started a pot of coffee brewing. Then she got Katie her breakfast. She was sitting on one of the couches, staring out at the sea, when Megan emerged from the bedroom a few minutes later.

“I smell coffee,” Megan said tiredly.

“I’ll get you some,” Margaret replied, getting to her feet.

In the kitchen, she poured her sister a cup of coffee and then topped up her own cup. As she handed Megan her drink, she gave her a small smile.

“How are you this morning?” she asked.

Megan shrugged. “I think I’m in shock mostly. Nothing feels quite real. I can’t believe that Carter is gone. I can’t believe that he was murdered. I can’t believe that any of this is happening.”

“I’m sorry,” was all that Margaret could think to say.

“I really thought this time I’d found the one.” Megan wiped away a tear. “I loved him a lot. I should have told him how I felt. I mean, I told him that I loved him, but I never told him how important he was to me. I never told him that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him. I never told him that he was my soulmate. I should have told him all of those things.”

“You were right to be cautious with those words.”

Megan sighed. “Why? Because he might have just laughed in my face and told me that he’d just been having a bit of fun? He wouldn’t have done that. He loved me too. He was going to propose on this trip. I’m certain of that.”

Margaret took a sip of her coffee. “What about breakfast?” she asked.

“I don’t suppose you want to go to the Welton?” She shook her head. “I don’t want to go to the Welton. I mean, I do, because we had breakfast there yesterday – was that just yesterday? And I was so happy. It was the first day of what was going to be the best vacation I’d ever experienced. I want to go back to the Welton and have it be yesterday and do things differently.”

“We can’t do that.”

“I’m not hungry anyway.”

“But you need to eat. At least have a little something. Some yogurt and fruit or some cereal. Or I can make pancakes and bacon.”

Megan blinked back tears. “I want pancakes and bacon, but I don’t think I can actually eat.”

“I’ll make them and then you can have a few bites at least.”

As Margaret started getting out the ingredients that she needed, Megan walked over and sat down at the table.
